Tell Me

A man on the Lifer Wing told him how difficult just the ordinary things could be.

He told him what he should have noticed for himself had he not been too ready to accept the prison and its ways. Some men had forgotten how to behave, how to be at ease, how to seem normal.

Forgetting the social skills is easy to do in prison and the right impression is something to be studied: what to say and how to say it, how to look, how to sit, how close to get, but, what to think, that's a different matter. We can all think what we like in the privacy of our own heads. Think what we don't like too. Think what we never wanted to think.
